Herbs & Spices

Ayurveda views herbs and spices as a natural, effective way to support the body’s function. When we include the six tastes of sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent in each meal, we are achieving physical harmony which promotes and protects our health.

Simple kitchen herbs like cardamom, nutmeg, and ginger have profound healing effects when used in relation to our unique dosha. For example, cardamom detoxifies caffeine in coffee but if used in excess, it will increase pitta dosha. Nutmeg is used to alleviate insomnia but its heating qualities can aggravate pitta dosha. And while ginger pacifies menstrual cramps, using fresh ginger rather than powdered might be wise depending on your dosha.

While the complexities and healing abilities of herbs and spices are substantial, they can be mistakenly misused or perhaps not used at all. This is where I am Ayurveda supports and guides you into a new way of relating to what’s available to you.
